HS5800: Cross Cultural Exchange in the Indian Ocean

“Cultural Exchange in the Indian Ocean” Teachers’ Institute offers participants an opportunity to examine the current events, culture, and history of the Indian Ocean community. The course makes use of a balance of both historic and contemporary resource materials to investigate trade patterns, migration, religion, music, art, and cultural interactions in (and between) the regions of East Africa, Arabia, India, and South East Asia. The course will also explore various curriculum ideas and pedagogical techniques with the objective of assisting educators who wish to bring the richness of this region into their own humanities classrooms. This course is ideal for educators and planners who are seeking solid content and methods in order to develop an integrated, humanistic approach to teaching about world cultures, history and geography.
