Using ILL for the First Time

Use your myPlymouth username and password to login to InterLibrary Loan.

There is a short questionnaire you must answer the first time you login.  The information is used to deliver ILL items to you, and to contact you about ILL requests (if an item is overdue, for example).

Interlibrary Loan

Items we don’t have access to may be requested through InterLibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan is available at no cost to students, faculty, staff, and those alumni who have a borrowing card.

These materials can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan:

  • Books
  • Journal Articles
  • Theses & Dissertations
  • Music scores
  • Audio/visual materials

These materials might not be borrowable through ILL:

  • Whole periodical issues
  • Recent newspapers
  • Some movies and audio recordings
  • Some reference books
  • Bulky, fragile, rare, or extremely valuable materials
  • Any item that a potential lending library is not willing to loan

About ILL

Journal articles are delivered via email in most cases.  It usually takes a couple days for you to receive your article.  You can always check the status of a pending request by logging into InterLibrary Loan.

Books may take between a few days and a couple weeks to deliver.  When a book arrives, you will be notified via email that your ILL request is ready.  They can be picked up at the circulation desk.

Terms of the Lending Library

Because books you request through ILL are owned by other libraries, those libraries set the loan period, which is normally about two weeks. A renewal should be requested only when absolutely necessary, and should be done at least one week in advance of the due date. Return all ILL books to the Information Desk. ILL books may also be recalled by the lending institution, in which case we would need the material returned immediately. Lending libraries also determine any conditions regarding the use of their materials. Limitations such as “No Renewal” or “Library Use Only” must be honored.

For assistance, contact the Interlibrary Loan Office, (535- 2576), or the Reference Librarian (535-2455).

When to ILL

The library provides access to thousands of resources instantly, but sometimes you encounter items we don't have.  Here's how to tell when ILL is the right choice:

If you see one of these buttons next to an item you want, you should place an ILL request:
