Newbery award winning book banned from libraries

Librarian/author Susan Patron discovered the downside of winning the highest award in children’s literature.

In her 2007 Newbery Award winning book, The Higher Power of Lucky, the word “scrotum” appears on the first page. The books heroine, Lucky Trimble, hears the word through a wall from another character who is describing where his dog was bitten by a rattlesnake.

Fearing controversy, libraries in several areas of the country have banned the book entirely from their collections.

Read more about the uproar of one word from Sunday’s New York Times or listen to an interview with the author on National Public Radio.
