Black History Month: a plaque returns home and politics moves forward

Lamson Library and Learning Commons celebrates Black History Month with a look at two timely topics in the history of African Americans.

On Thursday, February 14th, the life of abolitionist Nathaniel P. Rogers (1794-1846), a Plymouth Native, was celebrated at PSU’s Silver Center for the Arts, which occupies the land where his home once stood. A plaque commemorating Nathaniel Rogers’ role in the underground railroad was installed in Silver Hall, but it was removed from the building during a major renovation project in the early 1990’s. At that time, the plaque was placed in University Archives. Thursday’s commemorative ceremony featured remarks made by Project Coordinator Dr. Whitney Howarth, retired NH Supreme Court Justice, William Batchelder and Rogers’ great-great-grandaughter Sarah A. Kinter. A rousing group singing of “The Liberty Ball” led by 3rd graders at Plymouth Elementary School, contributed to the festive atmosphere.

Spinelli Archives would like to acknowledge the hard work of Professor Whitney Howarth, History Club President Sarah Vendt, and the many students who researched and organized this event.

A selection of material on the underground railroad and those devoted to anti-slavery, are on display in the library near the entrance.

In another look back (and forward), the 2008 Presidential election offers Americans a black candidate, Barack Obama, in a tight race for his party’s nomination. Black politicians have always played a part in the race for the White House, however, and many African American politicians seek office each year. A selection of materials is on display near the Reference/Research Desk.
