The Lamson Library and Learning Commons is pleased to welcome a display of Stencil Artwork in the Commons Cafe. PSU Graphic Design student Alexandra (Alex) Albrecht (see artwork at right), curator of the display described this new addition to mainstream art.
……(stencil art) started in the world of Graffiti art and has become more accepted. Stenciling was originally used to label crates and boxes for official use and today those boxes are being used as a form of art. They became popular because they are used a lot for graffiti. It is very quick and easy to use spray paint and a stencil to create a work where you need to get in and out of somewhere quick without being caught.
Stencil art isn’t used just for graffiti. More and more artists are seeing stenciling as a legitimate form of art because what artists are making is more complex and visually engaging than it has been in the past.
The artwork will be on display until December 11, 2009.
