Coordinated by Linda Walsh, artist and student in Annette Mitchell’s course, Abstraction: Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking.
In January 2015 students in a studio art course titled Abstraction: Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking studied the nature of abstraction–how it works in everyday life, and in the visual arts. Exercises were introduced that “courted the muse of simplification and/or rearrangement.” Visiting artists and guests introduced topics (and artwork) that encouraged critical thinking about what our culture considers abstract.
Many of the students realized how large a part abstraction plays in our daily lives and came to the realization that they had been creating abstract work all along.
This exhibition celebrates the work created by that January class.
“The more you paint and the better you become at representation, the more you realize that every picture, no matter how true the likeness, is an interpretation.” Shaun McNiff, Trust The Process
